Example

A risk with 30% probability of occurring, $50,000 impact if it does:

Risk Exposure = (30/100) x 50,000 = $15,000.00 expected exposure

Why This "Expected Value" Approach Helps

This lets project managers rank and prioritize multiple risks on a directly comparable numeric scale - a low-probability, high-impact risk and a high-probability, low-impact risk can produce the same expected exposure, revealing priorities a simple qualitative rating would miss.
