Applicant Conversion Rate Calculator
The Headline Number for Any Hiring Campaign
Before breaking a hiring funnel into individual stages, it's often useful to have the single top-line figure: out of everyone who applied, what fraction was actually hired. It's a blunt metric, but that's also what makes it a fast, comparable benchmark across job postings, quarters, or entire departments.
The Formula
Applicant Conversion Rate = (Hires / Applicants) × 100
Where This Is Useful
- Job posting performance — compare conversion rate across different job boards or postings for the same role to see which attracted the most qualified pool.
- Setting sourcing targets — a known historical conversion rate lets a recruiter back into how many applicants a target headcount actually requires.
- Quarter-over-quarter tracking — a declining rate over time can flag a widening mismatch between job postings and the candidates they're attracting.
Worked Example
| Applicants | Hires | Conversion rate |
|---|---|---|
| 400 | 10 | 2.5% |
