How hours-based PTO accrual works
Rather than granting a flat annual PTO amount, many employers tie earned time off directly to actual hours worked - this matters especially for part-time employees or those with variable schedules.
Worked example
For 80 hours worked at an accrual rate of 0.0577 hours per hour worked (roughly 3 weeks of PTO per year for full-time work):
PTO Accrued = 80 x 0.0577 = 4.616 PTO hours accrued
Frequently asked questions
Where does the 0.0577 figure come from? It's derived by dividing a target annual PTO amount (in this example, 3 weeks = 120 hours) by standard annual work hours (2080 hours for full-time), giving the accrual rate per hour actually worked.
Does this apply to overtime hours too? Policies vary by employer - some accrue PTO on all hours worked including overtime, while others cap accrual at standard hours only. Check your specific employer's policy for the exact rules that apply.
