REM Sleep Calculator

Estimating the REM Share of a Night's Sleep

REM (rapid eye movement) sleep is the stage most associated with dreaming and memory consolidation, and it isn't spread evenly through the night — it's brief early on and stretches longer in the cycles closest to morning. Without a sleep lab or a validated tracker, the closest practical estimate comes from applying the typical REM share of total sleep time observed in healthy adults.

The Formula

Estimated REM Sleep = Total Sleep Time × REM Share (20%–25% of total sleep in healthy adults)

The calculator applies both ends of that typical range to the entered total sleep time, returning a low and high estimate in both hours and minutes.

Where This Matters

  • Interpreting a wearable's sleep-stage breakdown — comparing a device's reported REM total against the typical 20–25% range gives a quick sanity check.
  • Understanding a short night's trade-off — because REM concentrates later in the night, cutting sleep short tends to cut disproportionately into REM rather than deep sleep.
  • General sleep-health awareness — seeing the estimated REM minutes alongside total sleep time makes the abstract stage breakdown more concrete.

Estimated REM Sleep by Total Sleep Time

7 hrs1.4 hrs (84 min)1.75 hrs (105 min)

Actual REM proportion varies by individual, age, and sleep quality, and can only be measured precisely with polysomnography or a validated sleep tracker.

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Enter your total sleep time in hours in the Total Sleep Time field.
  2. Select Calculate to see the estimated REM sleep range in both hours and minutes.
