Why an Arrow's Stiffness Has to Match the Bow

Arrow spine — how much an arrow shaft flexes under load — has to be matched to draw weight and arrow length, or the arrow won't fly true. Too stiff and the arrow reacts sluggishly off the string; too weak and it flexes excessively, throwing off accuracy. Lower spine numbers mean a stiffer shaft; higher numbers mean a more flexible one, which trips up a lot of newcomers expecting the opposite. This calculator gives a rough starting estimate from draw weight and arrow length alone.

The Formula

The estimate scales a baseline spine value up or down from a reference draw weight and arrow length:

Spine ≈ 500 − (Draw Weight − 40) × 5.0 + (Arrow Length − 28) × 15.0

The baseline reference is a 40 lb draw weight and a 28 inch arrow length, both producing a spine near 500 — a common mid-range standard spine deflection value. Increasing draw weight lowers the required spine number (a stiffer arrow is needed), while increasing arrow length raises it (a longer, more flexible shaft needs a stiffer spine to compensate, so the number moves up as an approximation of that added flex). The result is floored at 150, since spine values below that aren't standard.
