Turning a Single Round Into a Comparable Number
A gross score of 90 means something completely different on a tight, high-slope championship course than it does on a forgiving municipal layout. The USGA-style handicap differential exists to strip out that course-difficulty bias, converting any round — on any course — into a number that can be fairly compared against rounds played anywhere else. This calculator runs that conversion from a single scorecard.
The Formula
The differential and the resulting handicap index follow the standard USGA-style calculation:
Handicap Index = Differential × 0.96
The constant 113 is the USGA's designated "standard" slope rating, used to normalize every course back to a common baseline. The 0.96 multiplier is the bonus-for-excellence factor applied when converting a differential into an index. The result is truncated (not rounded) to one decimal place, matching how official handicap calculations are typically presented.
Where This Calculation Matters
- Fair competition — handicap indexes let golfers of different skill levels compete on equal footing through course handicaps and net scoring.
- Tracking improvement — watching the differential trend down over a season is a more reliable improvement signal than watching raw scores, since raw scores are muddied by which courses were played.
- Club and league eligibility — many club events and leagues set entry or flight brackets based on handicap index.
- Course selection strategy — knowing how slope rating amplifies or dampens a differential helps golfers understand why the same score "feels" harder-earned on some courses.
