Comparing Strength Across Bodyweights, Honestly

A 180 kg total means something very different from a 70 kg lifter than from a 120 kg lifter. Federations solve this with the Wilks coefficient, a published fifth-degree polynomial regression with separate official coefficients for men and women that normalizes a total against bodyweight. This calculator does not attempt to reproduce those official coefficients — getting a regression constant even slightly wrong would silently misrepresent every score run through it. Instead it reports a straightforward, verifiably correct relative-strength ratio: total divided by bodyweight.

The Formula

This calculator's own explanation is explicit about the tradeoff, and the same reasoning applies here:

Total = Squat + Bench + Deadlift
Relative Strength = Total ÷ Bodyweight

This is a simplified metric, not the official Wilks score or IPF GL Points — both of which require precisely-published, federation-maintained coefficients that are outside the scope of a general calculator to reproduce accurately. For an official Wilks or GL Points score for competition purposes, use your federation's official calculator.

  • Weight-class planning — comparing the ratio at your current bodyweight against a target class shows whether cutting or gaining weight would net you a better relative-strength position.
  • Training log reference — recording total and ratio together after each meet or heavy training block builds a comparable history.
  • Understanding the limits of a simple ratio — this figure is directionally useful but does not correct for the non-linear relationship between bodyweight and strength that Wilks and GL Points are specifically built to model.
