The NFL and NCAA both publish quarterback rating formulas, but they aren't the same formula — and mixing them up produces numbers that look plausible but are simply wrong. The NCAA's passer efficiency rating weights completions, yardage, touchdowns, and interceptions on its own linear scale, with no artificial cap the way the NFL's formula has. This calculator uses the NCAA version specifically.

The Formula

The NCAA passer efficiency rating is a single linear formula, unlike the NFL's four-part clamped calculation:

Rating = ((8.4 × Yards) + (330 × TD) + (100 × Completions) − (200 × Interceptions)) ÷ Attempts

Each statistical category is weighted by a fixed coefficient and the total is divided by pass attempts, producing a single rating with no theoretical ceiling — unlike the NFL formula, whose individual components are clamped between 0 and 2.375 before being combined.
