Daily Fantasy Basketball Runs on a Different Scoring Table

Season-long fantasy basketball leagues often use their own custom scoring, but daily fantasy sports (DFS) platforms standardized around a specific weighting convention popularized by DraftKings — one that values assists and defensive stats noticeably higher than raw points. Knowing that weighting is what separates guessing at lineup value from actually calculating it.

The Formula

This calculator uses the DraftKings-style basketball DFS scoring convention:

Fantasy Points = PTS × 1 + REB × 1.25 + AST × 1.5 + STL × 2 + BLK × 2 − TO × 0.5

Points carry the base weight of 1, while rebounds, assists, steals, and blocks are all weighted above that — steals and blocks most heavily, at double value. Turnovers are the only negative in the formula, subtracted at half a point each.

Where This Calculation Matters

  • Lineup construction — comparing two players by DFS points rather than raw box score stats reveals which one actually offers more salary-cap value under this scoring system.
  • Player projection — converting a projected statline into expected fantasy points before setting a lineup, rather than after the fact.
  • Post-slate review — checking that a DFS platform scored a completed slate correctly against your own manual calculation.
  • Understanding stat value skew — because steals and blocks are weighted at double value, this formula rewards defensive specialists more than points-per-game rankings alone would suggest.

Sample DFS Point Totals

Computed directly from the formula, these show how differently a scoring-heavy line and a stat-diverse line can total:

Example DraftKings-style fantasy point totals
StatlineFantasy points
25 pts, 10 reb, 8 ast, 2 stl, 1 blk, 3 TO54.00 pts
35 pts, 5 reb, 3 ast, 1 stl, 0 blk, 2 TO46.75 pts

Despite scoring 10 fewer points, the first statline out-scores the second because of its stronger rebounding, assist, and steal contributions under this weighting.
