A golfer's real handicap is not a single round — it is a running average that shifts every time a new score is posted. Play a strong week and it drops; play a rough patch on a tough course and it climbs back up. This tracker is built for that ongoing process: instead of estimating a handicap from one round, it takes several recent rounds at once and recalculates the index from the whole set, the way a golfer actually monitors form across a season rather than a single afternoon.
The Formula
Each round produces its own score differential, which adjusts the raw score for the difficulty of the course played:

Why Tracking Beats a One-Off Estimate
- Spotting a trend early — entering each new round as it happens shows whether recent scoring is trending down (improving) or creeping up, well before a full 20-round cycle would reveal it.
- Setting realistic course handicaps — a current index, not a stale one from months ago, is what should feed into course handicap conversions for weekend matches and club events.
- Comparing courses fairly — because the differential formula already adjusts for course rating and slope, rounds played at a hard course and an easy course can be tracked side by side without one unfairly dragging the average.
- Off-season or short-season golfers — golfers who only get a handful of rounds in before a trip or tournament can still get a working index from those rounds alone.

Principles of the World Handicap System (WHS)
A golf handicap calculator computes a golfer's standardized Handicap Index under the international World Handicap System (WHS) (governed jointly by the USGA and R&A). The WHS establishes a portable numerical measure of a golfer's demonstrated playing ability, allowing players of differing skill levels to compete equitably on any rated golf course across the globe.
The Core Score Differential Formula
For every round played on a rated golf course, an individual Score Differential is calculated:
- Adjusted Gross Score (AGS): The golfer's total gross strokes adjusted under Net Double Bogey maximum hole score limits.
- Course Rating: The USGA rating representing the expected score for a scratch golfer (0.0 handicap) under normal course conditions.
- Slope Rating: The relative difficulty of the course for a bogey golfer compared to a scratch golfer (standard baseline benchmark Slope = 113; ranges from 55 to 155).
- Playing Conditions Calculation (PCC): Daily statistical adjustment (-1.0 to +3.0) accounting for abnormal weather (high winds, wet fairways).
Handicap Index Calculation: Average of Best 8 of 20
A player's official Handicap Index is computed as the mathematical arithmetic mean of the lowest (best) 8 Score Differentials out of the most recent 20 eligible rounds, rounded to the nearest tenth (0.1):

Example: Calculating Score Differential and Course Handicap
Problem: A golfer with an 11.4 Handicap Index shoots an Adjusted Gross Score of 84 on a course with Par = 72, Course Rating = 71.2, and Slope Rating = 128. PCC = 0. Calculate: (1) The Score Differential for this round; and (2) The player's exact Course Handicap for this set of tees.
Step 1: Calculate the Score Differential:
Differential = ( 113 / 128 ) × ( 84 - 71.2 - 0 )
Differential = 0.88281 × 12.8 = 11.30 ≈ 11.3
Step 2: Calculate Course Handicap:
CH = 11.4 × ( 128 / 113 ) + ( 71.2 - 72.0 )
CH = 11.4 × 1.13274 - 0.80 = 12.913 - 0.80 = 12.11 ≈ 12 Strokes
Conclusion: The round produces an 11.3 Score Differential, and the player receives exactly 12 handicap strokes on this course layout.
WHS Safeguards: Soft Cap, Hard Cap, and Exceptional Score Reduction
- Low Handicap Index Anchor: Tracks the lowest index achieved in the preceding 365 days. If an index rises 3.0 strokes above the low anchor, a Soft Cap suppresses further upward movement by 50%; a Hard Cap prevents any index from rising more than 5.0 strokes.
- Exceptional Score Reduction (ESR): Submitting a differential 7.0 to 9.9 strokes lower than current index automatically reduces the index by -1.0; differentials ≥ 10.0 lower reduce the index by -2.0.
Net Double Bogey Maximum Hole Score Calculation
Under WHS rules, the maximum score a golfer can submit on any individual hole for handicap purposes is Net Double Bogey:
This prevents an anomalous 10 or 12 on a single difficult water hole from distorting a player's true baseline playing ability.
Match Play Net Stroke Handicap Allocations
In match play competitions, the lower handicap player plays at scratch (zero strokes), while the higher handicap player receives 100% of the course handicap difference distributed across the course scorecard's lowest Stroke Index holes.
