Run Rate Is the Pulse of a Cricket Innings
Every run rate figure on a scoreboard is really a rate problem dressed up in cricket terms: runs scored divided by overs faced. It sounds trivial until the required run rate starts climbing in a chase and commentators, captains, and players all need the exact number, not a rough guess, to judge whether the required pace is realistic or the game has slipped away. This calculator handles the arithmetic precisely, including the awkward part most people get wrong — converting balls bowled within an over into a decimal fraction of an over.
The Formula
Run rate is runs scored per over faced, where the overs figure is converted from whole overs and balls into a decimal:
Run Rate = Runs Scored / Overs (decimal)
The balls component must be between 0 and 5 — six legal balls complete an over and roll into the next whole-over count.
Where This Number Actually Matters
- Setting a target — the batting side's current run rate shows whether the scoring pace supports a competitive total by the end of the innings.
- Chasing a target — the required run rate (target runs remaining divided by overs remaining) tells the chasing side exactly how fast they now need to score, and it changes after every over.
- Net run rate in tournaments — group-stage standings in limited-overs tournaments are frequently separated by net run rate when teams are level on points, making precise run rate tracking relevant beyond a single match.
- Powerplay and death-over planning — teams set internal targets for specific phases of the innings, comparing the actual run rate in that phase against the plan.

Figures computed directly from the run rate formula above; "10.5" here means 10 overs and 3 balls, not ten and a half overs, since balls only run from 0 to 5.
Required Run Rate Example
A side chasing 220 runs in a 50-over innings has reached 90 runs after 20 overs. With 130 runs and 30 overs remaining:
= (220 − 90) / (50 − 20) = 130 / 30 = 4.33 runs/over
