Shipping costs, cutting yields, and fabric pricing all hinge on total weight, but fabric is usually specified by its areal density (GSM, grams per square meter) rather than a total figure. Converting a roll's length and width into an actual weight in kilograms is simple arithmetic once GSM is known, but it's a calculation that gets done constantly across sourcing, freight, and production planning.

The Formula

Area = Length × Width
Weight(g) = Area(m²) × GSM

Where This Matters

  • Freight and shipping quotes — carriers price by weight, so converting a roll's dimensions to actual kilograms is a necessary step before requesting a freight quote.
  • Comparing fabric options by weight — two fabrics with the same GSM but different roll dimensions will still ship at very different total weights.
  • Verifying a supplier's stated weight — cross-checking a delivered roll's actual weight against its stated length, width, and GSM catches under- or over-delivery.
