Different Stitches Use Very Different Amounts of Thread

A single meter of seam doesn't consume a single meter of thread — the actual consumption ratio depends heavily on stitch type, since some stitch classes loop thread back on itself far more than others. A flatlock seam can use more than twice the thread of a simple lockstitch over the same seam length, which makes stitch type, not just seam length, the dominant factor in a thread budget.

The Formula

Thread Needed = Seam Length × Stitch Consumption Ratio × (1 + Waste% ÷ 100)

Where This Matters

  • Ordering thread for a production run — underestimating consumption ratio for overlock or flatlock seams is a common cause of running out of thread mid-run.
  • Costing a garment — thread is a small but real line item, and multi-stitch garments (lockstitch main seams plus overlock finishing) need consumption calculated per stitch type separately.
  • Comparing construction methods — choosing a lighter-consumption stitch where the seam allows can meaningfully cut thread cost across a large order.

Worked Example

A 10 m seam sewn with a Lockstitch (301), including 5% waste allowance:

Thread Needed = 10 × 3.0 × (1 + 5/100) = 31.5 m
