Thread count is the most consumer-familiar textile metric, printed prominently on bedding packaging as shorthand for quality. What it actually measures is simpler than the marketing around it suggests: the total number of threads, both lengthwise (warp) and crosswise (weft), packed into one square inch of woven fabric.
The Formula
Thread Count = Warp Threads per Inch + Weft Threads per Inch
Where This Matters
- Comparing bedding and shirting fabrics — thread count is the headline number used to compare fabric density across products, though it's most meaningful when fiber type and yarn quality are also similar.
- Verifying a supplier's claim — counting warp and weft threads directly on a sample under magnification checks whether a stated thread count matches the actual weave.
- Weave density specification — mills use thread count as a core spec alongside GSM to fully describe a woven fabric's construction.
