Why a Loom Rarely Hits Its Rated Speed
A loom's RPM rating describes how fast it could weave running flat-out with no interruptions, but stops for yarn breaks, pattern changes, and routine maintenance mean actual output always falls short of that theoretical maximum. Loom efficiency captures exactly how much shortfall there is, expressed as a percentage of actual picks woven against the theoretical maximum for the same run time.
The Formula
Theoretical Picks = Loom Speed(RPM) × Run Time(min)
Efficiency% = (Actual Picks ÷ Theoretical Picks) × 100
Efficiency% = (Actual Picks ÷ Theoretical Picks) × 100
Where This Matters
- Benchmarking a weaving shed — comparing efficiency across looms or shifts highlights machines or crews that are underperforming relative to rated speed.
- Production scheduling — planners use a realistic efficiency percentage, not the theoretical maximum, to estimate how long an order will actually take to weave.
- Diagnosing downtime — a sudden drop in efficiency on a specific loom often points to a mechanical issue or yarn quality problem worth investigating.
