Formula (Elo Rating System)
Expected Score = 1 / (1 + 10^((Opponent Rating - Player Rating)/400))
Rating Change = K-Factor x (Actual Score - Expected Score)
Example
1500-rated player beats a 1600-rated opponent, K-factor of 32:
Expected Score = 0.360 → +20.5 rating points (new rating: 1520)
Why Beating a Higher-Rated Player Gains More Points
Beating a much higher-rated opponent gains significantly more rating points than beating a similarly-rated or lower-rated one, since the Elo system's expected-score calculation already accounts for how surprising each result is relative to the actual rating gap between the two players.
Why K-Factor Matters
K-factor controls how much any single game result moves your rating - higher K-factors (used for newer or more volatile players) produce bigger swings per game, while lower K-factors (often used for well-established, higher-rated players) produce more gradual, stable rating changes over time.
