From Grid Dimensions to a Piece Count You Can Trust

Jigsaw puzzle boxes advertise a round number like "1000 pieces," but if you're designing a custom puzzle, cutting your own, or just want to know how big each piece will actually be, what matters is the grid: how many rows and columns of pieces make up the finished picture. This calculator turns that grid into a total piece count and, if you know the finished image size, the approximate dimensions of each individual piece.

The Formula

Total Pieces = Rows × Columns If image dimensions are known: Average Piece Area = (Image Width × Image Height) ÷ Total Pieces Piece Width = Image Width ÷ Columns Piece Height = Image Height ÷ Rows

A 20-row by 30-column grid cut from a 24 by 18 inch image:
