Quantifying Why a Riddle Feels Tricky
A good riddle's difficulty rarely comes from one thing — it's usually a combination of how much information you have to hold in mind, how unfamiliar the phrasing is, and how many deliberate misdirections are baked in. This calculator scores those three factors separately and combines them into a single difficulty figure out of 100.
The Formula
Trick elements — deliberate misdirection, double meanings, or red herrings — are weighted most heavily at up to 40 points, since they're generally what separates a riddle from a plain description. Word count and average word length are normalized against 20 words and 7 letters respectively, each capped at 30 points.
Worked Example
A 15-word riddle with an average word length of 5 letters and 2 trick elements:
