Jigsaw Puzzle Completion Time Calculator
Jigsaw Puzzle Completion Time Calculator
Planning a puzzle night? This calculator estimates completion time, accounting for diminishing returns from extra helpers.
Combined Rate = Solo Pieces Per Hour x (Number of Solvers ^ 0.7)
Estimated Hours = Piece Count / Combined Rate
Example
A 1,000-piece puzzle, 40 pieces/hour solo rate, 3 people working together:
Combined Rate = 86.3 pieces/hour → ~11.6 hours to complete
Why More People Doesn't Mean Proportionally Faster
Adding more people to a jigsaw puzzle doesn't speed things up proportionally - limited table space, overlapping search efforts for the same pieces, and coordination overhead for sorting all create diminishing returns as group size grows.
Why the 0.7 Exponent
This is why the formula scales team output by the number of solvers raised to the 0.7 power, rather than a straight multiplication - a group of 4 doesn't finish a puzzle in a quarter of the solo time, but noticeably faster than solo, reflecting this realistic diminishing-returns effect.
