Why premature babies need a different age comparison
Standard growth charts and developmental milestones are built around full-term (40-week) pregnancies - corrected age accounts for how early a baby arrived, giving a fairer comparison point for growth and development.
Worked example
For a baby now 12 weeks old chronologically, born at 32 weeks gestation:
Weeks Premature = 40 - 32 = 8 weeks
Corrected Age = 12 - 8 = 4.0 weeks corrected age
Pediatricians typically use corrected age when assessing growth and development milestones until a premature child reaches about 2 years of chronological age - after that point, the gap between corrected and chronological age generally becomes less clinically significant.
