Why Such a Tiny Mass Matters So Much

Despite an atmospheric lifetime measured in days to weeks (versus centuries for CO2), black carbon's global warming potential per unit mass is estimated at several hundred to over a thousand times that of CO2 - this combination of high potency and short lifetime makes reducing black carbon emissions one of the fastest-acting climate mitigation levers available, since cuts show up in reduced warming almost immediately rather than over decades.

Common Sources and Mitigation

Diesel engine retrofits with particulate filters, cleaner cookstove programs in regions relying on solid fuel burning, and reducing open agricultural burning are among the most commonly cited black carbon reduction strategies, often pursued alongside conventional CO2 reduction efforts as a complementary near-term climate action.
