Absolute emissions totals can be misleading when comparing organizations of very different sizes - emissions intensity normalizes total emissions against a measure of output, enabling fair efficiency comparisons.

Intensity = Total Emissions (kg CO2) / Output Value

Example

500 tonnes CO2 (500,000 kg) against $1,000,000 in output value:

Intensity = 500,000 / 1,000,000 = 0.5 kg CO2 per dollar of output

Why Intensity Beats Raw Totals for Comparison

A large company can have higher absolute emissions than a small one while still being considerably more emissions-efficient per dollar of output produced - this is exactly why intensity metrics, rather than absolute totals alone, sit at the center of most corporate sustainability reporting frameworks and national climate policy discussions (such as emissions per unit of GDP).

Choosing the Right Output Denominator

The output value can be revenue, units produced, value-added, or another relevant business metric - the right choice depends on what comparison you're trying to make, since different denominators can tell meaningfully different stories about the same underlying emissions data.
