A Direct, Predictable Conversion From Fuel Sulfur
Unlike NOx, SO2 formation is straightforward — virtually all sulfur in a fuel oxidizes to SO2 during combustion, making it one of the most predictable pollutant calculations in combustion engineering.
The Formula
SO2 Mass = Fuel Mass × Sulfur Fraction × (64/32)
64/32 is the molecular weight ratio of SO2 to elemental sulfur.
Worked Example
Burning 2,000 kg of fuel oil with 1.5% sulfur:
SO2 = 2,000 × 0.015 × 2 = 60 kg
