Why NOx Forms Even From Nitrogen-Free Fuel

Fuel sulfur converts almost directly to SO2, so sulfur emissions scale predictably with fuel sulfur content, but NOx is different — a meaningful share of NOx (called thermal NOx) forms from atmospheric nitrogen and oxygen reacting at high flame temperature, not from nitrogen already in the fuel. This is exactly why NOx control strategies often focus on lowering peak flame temperature (staged combustion, flue gas recirculation) rather than only on fuel selection, since even a perfectly nitrogen-free fuel still produces thermal NOx at high enough combustion temperatures.

Does burning less fuel always reduce emissions proportionally?
For CO2 and SO2, yes, roughly — they scale directly with fuel quantity, but NOx depends more on flame temperature and excess air than fuel quantity alone, so efficiency improvements don't always cut NOx by the same proportion.
