Nitrous oxide (N2O) is a byproduct of nitrogen fertilizer applied to agricultural soils - despite being emitted in relatively small quantities, it carries an extremely high global warming potential, making it a disproportionately significant contributor to agriculture's climate footprint.

Example
1,000 kg of nitrogen fertilizer applied at a 1% emission factor:
N2O-N = 10 kg → N2O = 15.7 kg → CO2-equivalent ≈ 4,290 kg
Why N2O Punches Above Its Weight
Despite only around 1% of applied nitrogen converting to N2O-N through soil microbial processes (per commonly cited IPCC default factors), N2O's global warming potential of roughly 273 times that of CO2 over a 100-year horizon means agricultural fertilizer use contributes far more to climate forcing than its modest emitted mass would suggest - this is a major reason precision fertilizer application and nitrogen use efficiency improvements are increasingly emphasized in sustainable agriculture.
