PM Emission Calculator

Estimating Soot and Ash Carried in Flue Gas

Particulate matter emissions vary enormously by fuel type — clean-burning gaseous fuels produce very little, while solid fuels like coal and biomass produce substantially more ash and soot per unit burned.

The Formula

PM Mass = Fuel Mass × PM Emission Factor(g/kg fuel)

Worked Example

Burning 500 kg of biomass at a PM factor of 5 g/kg:

PM = 500 × 5 = 2,500 g = 2.5 kg

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Enter the Fuel Mass burned.
  2. Enter the appropriate PM Emission Factor for your fuel type.
  3. Select Calculate to get particulate matter mass emitted.
