Carbon Offset Cost Calculator

Carbon Offset Cost Calculator

Carbon offset prices vary enormously depending on project type, methodology, and verification quality - this calculator estimates the total cost to offset a given quantity of CO2 emissions at a chosen price per tonne.

Total Offset Cost = CO2 Tonnes x Cost Per Tonne

Example

10 tonnes of CO2 at $15 per tonne:

Total Cost = 10 x $15 = $150

Why Prices Vary So Widely

Reforestation and forestry-based offset projects have historically traded at the lower end of the price range, while newer, more verifiable carbon removal technologies like direct air capture command substantially higher prices per tonne - largely reflecting differences in certainty of actual carbon removal, permanence (how long the captured carbon stays out of the atmosphere), and additionality (whether the reduction would have happened anyway without the offset funding).

Price Isn't the Whole Story

A lower price per tonne doesn't necessarily mean a better offset - looking for third-party verification standards (such as Verra's Verified Carbon Standard or Gold Standard certification) is generally considered more important than price alone when evaluating whether an offset purchase represents genuine, additional climate impact.
