Power and torque are not independent numbers - they are locked together through RPM, which is exactly why the same engine can have wildly different torque figures quoted at different points in its rev range.

The Formula

T (Nm) = P (kW) × 9549 / RPM

Worked Example

150 kW at 4,000 RPM: T = 150 × 9549 / 4,000 = 358.1 Nm.

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Enter engine power in kW.
  2. Enter the RPM at which that power is measured.

This is why a low-revving diesel with modest peak power can still feel stronger pulling away than a high-revving gasoline engine with more peak power - at low RPM, the same power translates into disproportionately more torque.
