What Actually Happens Inside a Running Engine

An engine's headline horsepower number is the end result of a chain of internal combustion calculations — compression ratio, volumetric efficiency, thermal efficiency — that determine how much of the fuel's energy actually becomes usable power. These seven calculators work through that chain.

Finding Brake Specific Fuel Consumption, Step by Step

  1. Measure fuel consumption rate. Record fuel mass burned over a fixed time period, in grams per hour.
  2. Measure brake power output. This is the actual usable power delivered at the crankshaft, in kilowatts, typically from a dynamometer reading.
  3. Divide fuel rate by power output. BSFC = fuel consumption (g/hr) ÷ brake power (kW), giving a result in grams per kilowatt-hour.
  4. Compare against typical values. A well-tuned modern gasoline engine often runs in the 220-280 g/kWh range at its most efficient operating point — lower BSFC means more power extracted per unit of fuel.
