Engine Volumetric Efficiency Calculator: How Well Does the Engine Breathe?
Volumetric efficiency measures how effectively an engine fills its cylinders with air compared to the theoretical maximum at ambient air density. Intake restrictions, valve timing, and induction system design all affect this figure, which directly limits how much fuel can be burned and how much power the engine can produce.
The Formula
VE% = Actual Air Mass Inducted / (Displacement Volume × Air Density) × 100
Worked Example
A cylinder with 0.0005 m3 displacement inducts 0.0005 kg of air per cycle, with ambient air density of 1.2 kg/m3.
Theoretical Air Mass = 0.0005 × 1.2 = 0.0006 kg, VE = 0.0005/0.0006 × 100 = 83.33%
