Engine Volumetric Air Intake Flow Calculator

Sizing an intake system, air filter, or turbocharger starts with knowing how much air the engine actually pulls in per minute - not the theoretical maximum, but the real figure after accounting for volumetric efficiency.

The Formula

Theoretical flow = Displacement × RPM / 2 (one intake stroke per two crankshaft revolutions in a 4-stroke engine)

Actual flow = Theoretical flow × Volumetric Efficiency

Worked Example

A 2.0L engine at 6,000 RPM with 85% volumetric efficiency: theoretical flow = 2.0 × 6,000 / 2 = 6,000 L/min; actual flow = 6,000 × 0.85 ÷ 1000 = 5.1 m³/min.
