Engine Displacement Calculator

Engine Displacement Calculator

Displacement is the headline number describing an engine's size - the total volume swept by all pistons across one complete stroke.

The Formula

V = (π/4) × bore² × stroke × cylinders

Worked Example

A 4-cylinder engine with an 86mm bore and 86mm stroke: V = (π/4) × 86² × 86 × 4 ÷ 1000 ≈ 1.998 L - almost exactly a "2.0 liter" engine, one of the most common displacements in production cars.

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Enter cylinder bore diameter in mm.
  2. Enter stroke length in mm.
  3. Enter the number of cylinders.
