Brake specific fuel consumption is the standard way engineers compare fuel efficiency across engines of different sizes: it measures fuel burned per unit of useful power delivered, rather than per unit time. Lower BSFC means better efficiency.

The Formula

BSFC = (Fuel Consumption(kg/hr) × 1000) / Power(kW)

Worked Example

An engine consumes 20 kg/hr of fuel while producing 80 kW of power.

BSFC = (20 × 1000) / 80 = 250 g/kWh
