Running a trivia night and want to hit your planned end time exactly? This calculator figures out how many questions to write, split evenly across your rounds.
Formula
Total Questions = (Duration in Minutes x 60) / Seconds Per Question
Questions Per Round = Total Questions / Number of Rounds
Example
A 90-minute event, 60 seconds per question, 4 rounds:
Total Questions = 90 → 22 questions per round
What "Seconds Per Question" Should Include
Don't just estimate thinking time - factor in reading the question aloud, collecting answer sheets or responses, and revealing/discussing the correct answer, since these add up across dozens of questions. A common pacing guideline allows roughly 45-90 seconds per question depending on difficulty and format, with harder or discussion-heavy questions needing more buffer time than quick multiple-choice rounds.
