Escape Room Team Size Calculator

Escape Room Team Size Calculator

Booking an escape room and wondering if your group is the right size to actually finish in time? This calculator estimates a recommended team size from puzzle count and time limit.

Total Solo-Equivalent Minutes = Puzzles x Minutes Per Puzzle Per Person
Recommended Team Size = Total Solo Minutes / Time Limit

Example

10 puzzles, each taking an average of 30 minutes solo, with a 60-minute time limit:

Total Solo Minutes = 300 → Recommended Team Size: 5 people

Why This Is a Simplified Estimate

Escape rooms rarely scale in perfectly linear fashion with team size - many puzzles are sequential (you can't attempt the combination lock until you've found the combination clue elsewhere in the room), and communication overhead actually grows with larger groups. Most commercial escape rooms are specifically designed around a recommended team size range (commonly 4-8 people) that the room's puzzle difficulty was calibrated against, so checking the venue's own recommendation alongside this estimate is a good idea.
