Carrier Probability Calculator

Carrier Probability Calculator

Wondering about your chance of carrying one copy of a recessive genetic condition? This calculator gives a simplified estimate based on whether you have a known affected first-degree family member.

Basis for the Estimate

  • With a known affected first-degree relative: approximately 50% carrier probability, following basic Mendelian inheritance for an autosomal recessive condition.
  • Without a known affected family member: the general population carrier frequency for that specific condition and ethnic background applies instead.

Example

A population carrier frequency of 4%, with a known affected sibling:

Estimated Carrier Probability = 50% (based on Mendelian first-degree relative risk, not the population baseline)

Important Limitations

This is a simplified educational estimate that doesn't account for more detailed pedigree analysis, specific inheritance patterns beyond simple autosomal recessive conditions, or condition-specific factors that a genetic counselor would consider. Population carrier frequencies vary enormously between different genetic conditions and ethnic backgrounds - some conditions have carrier frequencies well under 1%, while others (like certain conditions common in specific founder populations) can be considerably higher. This tool provides general educational information only and does not replace formal genetic counseling or carrier screening.
