Nature Time Calculator
Nature Time Calculator
How much time do you actually spend outdoors in nature each week? This calculator scales your daily estimate up to a weekly total and compares it against a well-known research benchmark.
Weekly Hours = (Daily Minutes x 7) / 60
Example
20 minutes outdoors in nature per day:
Weekly = (20 x 7) / 60 = 2.3 hours/week (at or above the research benchmark)
The 120-Minute Benchmark
A widely cited 2019 study published in Scientific Reports found that people who spent at least 120 minutes (2 hours) per week in nature reported meaningfully higher wellbeing and health outcomes than those who spent no time in nature at all. Notably, the study found this benefit held whether the 2 hours came in one long visit to a park or nature reserve, or was split across several shorter visits spread throughout the week.
Flexible, Not Rigid
This flexibility in how the time accumulates is genuinely good news - it means a lunchtime walk in a nearby park, tending a garden, or a weekend hike can all contribute toward the same cumulative weekly benefit, rather than requiring one dedicated long outdoor excursion.
