Weekly Novelty Calculator

Weekly Novelty Calculator

Trying new things - even small ones - has been linked to a richer, more memorable sense of time passing. This calculator tracks your weekly novelty count and scales it to an annual pace.

Annualized Pace = Weekly New Experiences x 52

Example

3 new experiences this week:

Annualized Pace = 3 x 52 = 156 per year (a strong amount of novelty and variety)

Why Novelty Feels Meaningful

Novelty-seeking - deliberately trying new restaurants, routes, activities, or skills - has been linked in wellbeing research to a subjective sense that time is passing more richly and memorably. This happens partly because routine, repeated experiences tend to blur together in memory, while novel experiences create distinct, individually retrievable memories that stand out when we look back.

Small Counts Just as Much as Big

This doesn't require major life changes or big adventures - trying a new recipe, walking a different route home, or striking up a conversation with someone new all count as genuine novelty, and small frequent novelty appears to accumulate the same wellbeing benefit as occasional larger new experiences.
