Flashcard Review Calculator
Turning a Deck Size Into a Daily Time Commitment
A 1,000-card vocabulary deck sounds manageable until it translates into a daily study block that doesn't fit the rest of your schedule. This calculator works in the other direction from most planning: instead of guessing at a review pace, it takes your total deck size and daily review capacity and returns both how long the deck will take to get through once, and how many minutes per day that pace actually costs.
The Formula
Daily Study Time = (Cards per Day × Seconds per Card) ÷ 60
The days-needed figure rounds up, since a partial day of remaining cards still requires a full review session. Daily study time converts total seconds spent per day into minutes, using an assumed average time per card.
Where This Matters
- Building a new deck — before committing to a large vocabulary list, this shows whether reviewing all of it daily is realistic given available time.
- Balancing speed against deck size — increasing daily card count shortens the time to finish a deck but increases the daily time cost, a tradeoff this calculator makes explicit.
- Comparing card review speed — simpler cards (single words) typically take less time per card than cards requiring a written or spoken answer, which changes the realistic seconds-per-card figure.
| Deck size | 10 cards/day | 20 cards/day | 50 cards/day |
|---|---|---|---|
| 200 cards | 20 days | 10 days | 4 days |
| 500 cards | 50 days | 25 days | 10 days |
| 1,000 cards | 100 days | 50 days | 20 days |
| 2,000 cards | 200 days | 100 days | 40 days |
These figures show a single pass through the deck; ongoing review of previously seen cards adds to the daily time cost once a spaced-repetition schedule is layered on top.
How to Use This Calculator
- Enter the total flashcards in the deck.
- Enter the cards reviewed per day you plan to study.
- Enter the average seconds per card (defaults to 8 seconds).
- Select Calculate for the days to complete the deck and the daily time commitment.
