Language Proficiency Level Calculator

Turning a Study Log Into a CEFR Level

The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) is the standard six-level scale — A1 through C2 — used across Europe and increasingly worldwide to describe language proficiency, from job listings to university admissions. Cambridge English and other bodies publish approximate guided-learning-hour ranges for reaching each level, and this calculator maps your cumulative study hours onto that scale to give a rough estimate of where you likely stand.

The Formula

Level = lowest CEFR level whose hour benchmark ≥ Total Cumulative Study Hours

Total cumulative study hours are compared against published upper-bound benchmarks for each CEFR level, and the calculator returns the lowest level whose benchmark the input hours fall within:

Approximate cumulative guided-learning hours by CEFR level
CEFR levelLabelCumulative hours (up to)
A1Beginner100
A2Elementary200
B1Intermediate400
B2Upper Intermediate600
C1Advanced900
C2Masteryunlimited (900+)

These are commonly cited approximate guided-learning-hour benchmarks (in the tradition of Cambridge English's published guidelines); actual hours to reach a level vary substantially with study method, native language, and immersion.

Where This Matters

  • Self-assessing before a proficiency test — a rough hours-based estimate helps set expectations before sitting a formal CEFR-aligned exam like DELF, Goethe-Zertifikat, or DELE.
  • Resume and job application context — many European employers and universities ask for CEFR self-ratings, and an hours-based estimate provides a reality check against overstating a level.
  • Tracking long-term progress — logging cumulative hours over months and re-checking the estimated level gives a tangible sense of progress that raw hours alone don't convey.

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Enter your total cumulative study hours for the language.
  2. Select Calculate to see your estimated CEFR level and label.
