The Foreign Service Institute trains American diplomats in dozens of languages and has, over decades, accumulated data on how long it actually takes an English speaker to reach general professional proficiency in each one. That data is grouped into four difficulty categories, and it remains the most widely cited reference point for "how long will this language take me" — not because it's precise for any individual learner, but because it's grounded in real outcomes across thousands of students rather than marketing copy from a language app.
The Formula
Total hours required comes from the FSI category benchmark for the chosen language group, and dividing by your planned daily study time converts that into a calendar timeline in days, weeks, and months.
Where This Matters
- Setting a realistic goal — the difference between a Category I and Category IV language is more than triple the study time, which should directly shape expectations before starting.
- Planning study intensity — seeing the total day count at different daily study loads (30 minutes vs. 2 hours) makes the practical tradeoff between pace and total calendar time concrete.
- Comparing target languages — if choosing between two languages for a specific goal (travel, work, family), the relative time investment is a legitimate factor in the decision.
