42 words known out of a 100-word random sample, drawn from a 50,000-word-family reference dictionary:

Known Fraction = 0.42 → Estimated Vocabulary = 0.42 x 50,000 = ~21,000 word families

Why Sampling Instead of Testing Every Word

Testing every single word in a comprehensive dictionary is impossible for any large reference list - instead, a random sample is drawn from that list, and the percentage known within the sample is extrapolated to estimate total vocabulary size across the entire reference. This is a well-established methodology in academic vocabulary research, provided the sample is genuinely representative and drawn randomly (not biased toward easier or more common words).

How This Compares to Native Speakers

Native speaker adult vocabularies are commonly estimated in published research to fall somewhere in the 20,000-35,000 word family range, though published estimates vary based on methodology and exactly what counts as a distinct "word family" (whether inflected forms and derivatives count separately or together).
