Zipf's Law: Why Coverage Gets Expensive Fast
Word frequency in natural language follows a highly skewed distribution commonly described by Zipf's Law - a relatively small number of the most frequent words cover a large majority of any given text, but returns diminish sharply as you push toward higher coverage percentages.
Why the Jump from 95% to 98% Matters So Much
Notably, going from 95% to 98% coverage roughly doubles the vocabulary needed (from ~3,000 to ~6,000 word families) - this illustrates exactly why true fluent-level comprehension (98%+, where reading feels smooth and effortless) requires disproportionately more vocabulary investment than merely "getting the gist" at 90-95% coverage, where you can follow along but still hit unfamiliar words regularly.
