Shadowing Practice Time Calculator
Shadowing - listening to native audio and speaking along with it in real time, mimicking pronunciation, rhythm, and intonation as closely as possible - is a widely recommended technique for pronunciation and fluency practice.
Total Time = Clip Length x Repetitions Per Clip x Number of Clips
Example
15-second clips, repeated 5 times each, across 10 clips:
Total Time = 15 x 5 x 10 = 750 seconds = 12.5 minutes
Why Repeat the Same Clip Multiple Times
Repeating the same short clip several times before moving to the next one lets you progressively refine your mimicry of that specific segment - your pronunciation, timing, and rhythm typically improve noticeably by the third or fourth repetition of the same short clip, an improvement that never happens if you instead shadow a long continuous passage just once, where early mistakes never get corrected through focused repetition.
Choosing Clip Length
Short clips (10-20 seconds) are generally easier to shadow accurately than long passages, since they're easier to hold in short-term memory while simultaneously speaking - this is exactly why the technique typically works best broken into many short, repeated segments rather than one continuous long recording.
