Long Distance Relationship Calculator

Turning "We Barely See Each Other" Into a Number

Long-distance couples often feel like they're apart constantly, even when regular visits are happening — the feeling and the reality can diverge. This calculator converts a visit schedule into a concrete percentage of the year spent together, plus the annual travel distance and cost, so the schedule can be judged on numbers instead of gut feeling alone.

The Formula

Visits per Year = Visits per Month × 12
Days Together per Year = Visits per Year × Visit Duration (days)
Days Apart per Year = 365 − Days Together per Year
Percent of Year Together = (Days Together per Year ÷ 365) × 100
Annual Travel Distance = Distance × 2 × Visits per Year (round trips)
Annual Travel Cost = Cost per Visit × Visits per Year

How the Visit Schedule Changes the Percentage

Time together per year at a fixed 2-day visit length
Visit frequencyVisits/yearDays together/year% of year together
Once a month12246.6%
Twice a month244813.2%
Weekly489626.3%

Doubling the visit frequency doubles both the days together and the annual travel distance/cost — the formula scales linearly, so there's no discount for visiting more often.

Where This Matters

  • Setting expectations — turning "we'll visit when we can" into a concrete percentage helps both partners agree on whether the current pace feels sufficient.
  • Budgeting for travel — the annual cost figure is useful when comparing flight versus driving distance visits, or when planning around a shared travel fund.
  • Deciding when to close the distance — a low "percent together" figure is often the number couples point to when discussing relocating to end the long-distance phase.
