Relationship Length Calculator

Exact Duration, Not a Rounded Guess

"About six and a half years" is the kind of answer most couples give when asked how long they've been together — useful in conversation, imprecise everywhere else. This calculator does true calendar-aware subtraction between a start date and an end date (or today, if the relationship is ongoing), accounting for how many days actually sit in each month rather than assuming a flat 30 days.

The Formula

Years = End Year − Start Year
Months = End Month − Start Month
Days = End Day − Start Day
(if Days is negative: borrow the number of days in the previous calendar month, and subtract one month)
(if Months is negative after that: borrow 12 months, and subtract one year)
Total Days = End Date − Start Date
Total Years (decimal) = Total Days ÷ 365.25

Worked Examples

Example durations (calculated to 2026-07-17)
Start dateEnd dateDurationTotal daysDecimal years
2020-02-142026-07-176 years, 5 months, 3 days2,3456.42
2023-09-012026-07-172 years, 10 months, 16 days1,0502.87

The calendar-exact breakdown (years/months/days) and the decimal-year figure will not match a simple "total days ÷ 365" estimate, because it correctly accounts for months of different lengths and leap years.

Where This Matters

  • Milestone conversations — settling the "how long have we actually been together" debate with an exact figure instead of a rounded guess.
  • Legal and immigration paperwork — some visa, cohabitation, or common-law relationship forms ask for precise relationship duration.
  • Social sharing — anniversary posts that state the day count exactly rather than "almost 3 years."

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Enter the Start Date of the relationship.
  2. Optionally enter an End Date — leave it blank to measure up to today.
  3. Select Calculate to see the duration in years, months, and days, plus the total day count.
