Ideal Gas Combustion Calculator: Moles to Volume for Combustion Products
Combustion calculations often start with a known number of moles of product gas from reaction stoichiometry, but process equipment needs to be sized in terms of volume. This calculator applies the ideal gas law directly to convert moles of combustion product gas into an occupied volume at actual operating conditions.
The Formula
V = nRT / P
where n is moles of gas, R is the universal gas constant (8.314 J/mol·K), T is absolute temperature in Kelvin, and P is absolute pressure in Pa.
Worked Example
10 moles of combustion product gas at 1,273 K and 101.325 kPa.
V = (10 × 8.314 × 1,273) / 101,325 = 1.045 m3
