It feels counterintuitive, but humid air is actually slightly lighter than dry air at the same temperature and pressure - this calculator shows exactly why.

Formula: Mhumid = (1 - xv) × Mdry air + xv × Mwater

Using Mdry air = 28.97 g/mol and Mwater = 18.02 g/mol.

Example: air with a 2% water vapor mole fraction has an average molar mass of about 28.75 g/mol - lower than dry air's 28.97 g/mol.

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Enter the water vapor mole fraction in the air (0 to 1).

Water molecules (18.02 g/mol) are lighter than the nitrogen and oxygen molecules that dominate dry air, so displacing some of that air with water vapor actually reduces the average molar mass - even though humid air intuitively "feels heavier" due to how it affects comfort and perspiration, not its actual physical mass.
