Exhaust Gas Composition Calculator

Exhaust Gas Composition Calculator: Mass Breakdown of Combustion Products

Once you know the mass of each species produced by combustion, whether from a hand calculation or a heat and mass balance, this calculator converts those masses into a percentage composition, useful for emissions reporting, heat balance work, and comparing combustion products across different fuels.

The Formula

Species% = Species Mass / Total Exhaust Mass × 100

Worked Example

Exhaust gas contains 2.7 kg CO2, 2.25 kg H2O, 13.2 kg N2, and 0.5 kg O2 (per unit fuel burned).

Total = 18.65 kg, giving CO2 14.48%, H2O 12.06%, N2 70.78%, O2 2.68% by mass.

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Enter the mass of CO2 produced.
  2. Enter the mass of H2O produced.
  3. Enter the mass of N2 present.
  4. Optionally enter the mass of excess O2 present.
  5. Click Calculate to see the mass-percentage breakdown of each species.
