Applying standard ROI math to SEO
SEO ROI uses the exact same formula as any other marketing channel: compare revenue generated against total cost invested. The challenge with SEO specifically is accurately attributing revenue, since organic search often plays a supporting role earlier in a longer customer journey.
Worked example
For $25,000 in revenue attributed to SEO against a $5,000 total SEO investment:
ROI = ((25000 - 5000) / 5000) x 100 = 400% ROI
| Input | Where to Find It |
|---|---|
| Revenue from SEO | Analytics goal value or e-commerce revenue filtered to organic search channel |
| Cost of SEO | Agency fees, tools, content production, and internal staff time |
Use assisted conversion or multi-touch attribution reporting where available, since first-click or last-click models alone can significantly under- or over-credit organic search's actual contribution to a sale.
